Nebulising Essential Oil Diffusers
In a nebulising diffuser, the oil is broken down into tiny particles with the help of high velocity, pressurized air stream, and jet nozzle. The whole essential oil gets diffused, instead of breaking in stages, then the whole oil is released as a fine mist. This fine mist does not alter chemical composition or scent in any way. It doesn’t require the use of heat or water, yet the whole oil which gets dispersed through the diffuser is optimal for inhalation and therapeutic benefits. The drawback of buying this diffuser is that it’s quite expensive to use and buy, they use much more quantity of oil than compared to other diffusers and they can be noisy too.
Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffusers
These are quite popular as compared to other diffusers. It requires the use of water and electronic frequency to create a mist. They use vibrations created by small disk under the surface where water is filled, this causes oil to break into tiny particles. It uses a small quantity of oil which means you can use around 2-4 drops and you are good to go, also it works without any requirement of heat. This can work efficiently as a humidifier as well, especially if you live in a drier climate. They don’t produce much noise which makes it suitable for use at night. Well, the downside is, the mist delivers very small quantity of oil, and a larger quantity of water so it is not very suitable in humid climate and if your intention is to have more oil diffused.
Heat Essential Oil Diffusers
These diffusers use heat for converting essential oils into vapours to evaporate into the air and thus creates aroma. You can mix water as well along with the oil but that will delay or bring down the effect. They are economical, easy to use and do not produce any sound. But, the heat can change properties of the oil, this means their therapeutic value goes down. These are not recommended for houses with kids and pets. Two of the most popular types available in the market are:
Ceramic Essential Oil Diffusers
This kind of diffuser is used by heating a clay or cement pot that holds drops of oils, but for the essential oil to evaporate it requires constant temperature without any use of water. Drop 2 to 4 drops and connect to electricity or light a candle below, here only the top part gets hot, so you don’t have to worry about touching it. They are on the lower side of pricing which makes them economical to buy. But, this diffuser comes with very small space for dropping incense and since it uses heat to break oil, you can lose some of the efficiency of it.
Lamp Warmer Oil Diffusers
Made of glass, this lamp warmer diffuser comes with a dual function, one as the name suggests it is used for aromatherapy and other as a lamp. Pour two-third of water in the container, connect with electricity, and turn on light and its ready to be used. But this diffuser is easy to break especially under high temperatures, adding water on a heated platform can cause the container to crack or even burst.
Evaporative Essential Oil Diffusers
These diffusers use air to spread the aroma of essential oil, a fan blows through the filter, through tissues on which you have to pour drops of essential oil. The air makes the oil evaporate which is spreads in the whole room. Wind-blown diffusion may produce low sound which makes it a good choice for night time usage. But it may not bring therapeutic benefits as such since all the component does not break at one go. First, the lighter one breaks then the heavier ones.
Please note that this article doesn’t cover use of ‘Reed Diffusion’ which is more suitable for some areas in your home or office.
The choice of a diffuser is very much based on what intended benefits you are after, however a good Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser can do most of the jobs for you. You can set different controls, time it, and what not. They are also aesthetically designed and will add to your home or office décor. There’s obviously a reason why these are more available to buy, but choose wisely so you don’t end up buying a poor quality one. It is an one-time investment for good!
